This is a well-written, fascinating study of a small Christian college and the changes it has endured over its 150 year history. The authors sensitively and honestly examine the social and theological changes that have occurred in this Reformed Dutch church institution of higher education. Like most Christian colleges founded in the U.S. in the 1800's (such as many Methodist, Presbyterian, and Baptist), Hope College struggled with balancing religious faith, social culture, and academic standards. Most Mainline Protestant colleges in America ended up losing their Christian identity in the 20th Century, becoming merely secular Liberal Arts colleges. While heading in that direction in the 1960's, Hope College deliberately returned to its Christian roots in the 1970's. It is now a florishing institution of higher education that blends Christian vitality, educational excellence, ecumenicism, and freedom.
