The First Stone Book Six of The Last Rune Mark Anthony 9780553583342 Books

It has been a long, fun, entertaining and sometimes frustrating journey with The Last Rune series, but after finishing the final installment I must say it was worth it in the end. The last couple of pages of this novel are worth the price of admission alone. My favorite character is Beltan and I was glad he was featured more in this novel than the last one. It was also satisfying having Travis realize that his love for Vani was basically a huge case of Author Intrusion.

This novel is not perfect, but it's very good nonetheless. There are certain sections (there's a 100+ page journal within) that dragged in certain parts, but overall it was an entertaining and satisfying story. We finally learn the true origins of the Seekers and the Philosophers (via the journal) and learn about the true origins of magic and why travel between Earth and Eldh is possible. The author really thought of everything in this novel! The ending is bittersweet because not everything ends in a predictable manner, and some characters don't get the endings you thought they would. That made me love the ending of this story even more.

If this was just another novel in the series I'd give it a solid four star rating, but since it's the last one and it ended so perfectly, I've decided to give it five stars, mainly for all the characters I have grown to care about over the course of the series. Overall, I'm glad I read these novels. If you don't mind queer characters in your fantasy novels, then I definitely recommend this series. It might get frustrating in places, but in the end I thought it was worth it.

Highly recommended!

The First Stone Book Six of The Last Rune Mark Anthony 9780553583342 Books Reviews

I had the series of 6 books of the Last Rune for a while before I finally read them, and when I did I was kicking myself for waiting so long. I could hardly put down each book as I read through the marvelous happenings that occured to Grace and Travis, and then the friends they make along the way. This particular book wrapped up the series nicely. It was a little sad, somewhat bittersweet, and not your typical "Everyone winds up living happily ever after" scenario. I for one was pleased because I get a little tired of the same old same old where everyone pairs up in some kind of romantic bonding, and the end is almost predictable. It wasn't until the very last book that I realized how everything was really connected as the Author finally spelled it out far more literally for us. I enjoyed that aspect of the books, the fact that I couldn't easily jump ahead!

I notice one of the commentators mentioned a poor rating in regards to this book and how it had nothing to do with the others -- but thats not exactly true. The other books were just a prelude really, other 'happenings' in the worlds that were taking place and certainly needed to be dealt with. But as we know, even if you solve one delima, that doesn't mean there isn't another, equally bad or even worse delima hovering just over the horizon.
As for Travis' family 'breaking up' and him supposedly not being with Vani, I think you should read the book for yourself and see exactly what happens, for it isn't as cut and dried as that statement implies. Vani and Travis' relationship isn't the end all and be all of the story after all. There's so much going on and so many connections between people that you can't focus on one simple aspect of the story.
I highly reccomend this series of books and I hope this author has more stories comming.

I would definitely reccomend this book.
I have not started reading it just yet, but if it follows the other books, it should be entertaining. I do care about the characters.
I love this whole series. One of my favorites. I find the characters engaging. I can't put these books down.
I loved this series of books. I had a full set and they were lost when my husband and I moved.
Before you start reading this, be aware I give this series 5-Stars--a "Must Read" for high-brow avid-reader snobs.

This series is the worst that Fantasy fiction has to offer. More characters appear in each novel some important, most not. Some of the volumes wobble between science fiction and fantasy.

This series is "A Winter's Tale" for the fantasy genre. Perfectly awful--Absolutely Perfectly!

I gave a scathing review of Mr. Anthony's first novel, "Beyond the Pale". After a few years hiatus, I took up the series once again to see what was happening. In a couple of the novels, the chapters are split into action-packed tales of one of the two protagonists and soupy romance events of the other. I skipped the chapters that didn't interest me. Did I lose the plot? No, because the romance plots were entirely dropped before I got to Volume Six.

Volumes Two through Six are well worth the read. Don't expect high-end'iness, but I think that wasn't the author's goal. What I feel he was aiming for was one of the most convoluted, entertaining, gory and gay stories he could imagine with far too many characters and way too many sub-plots. I think he did a wonderful job.

And, by the way, it is (they are) a really fun story.
Loved series. Had read it before and re-read on .
